Colorado Turns 150: The Centennial State’s Sesquicentennial

Celebrate Colorado’s 150th anniversary by exploring the people, places, and stories that shaped the Centennial State. From its breathtaking landscapes to its growing communities, this milestone honors Colorado’s rich history while looking ahead to its progressive future.

Colorado Turns 150: What the Centennial State’s Sesquicentennial Means for the People Who Call It Home

This Saturday, August 1, 2026, Colorado marks a milestone 150 years in the making. On that date in 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the proclamation admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state and this weekend, communities from Grand Junction to the Eastern Plains are celebrating the state’s sesquicentennial (that’s the fancy word for a 150th birthday).

For those of us who live, work, and put down roots here, it’s a moment worth pausing on. A century and a half is a long arc and understanding where Colorado came from adds real depth to what it means to own a home in the Centennial State today.

Why “The Centennial State”?

Colorado’s nickname is one of the best pieces of trivia in American geography. The state joined the Union in 1876 exactly 100 years after the United States declared independence in 1776. Grant’s proclamation came just four weeks after the nation’s centennial celebration, and a Denver newspaper had already floated the name a year earlier. The timing stuck, and Colorado has been the Centennial State ever since.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime “Twin Anniversary”

Here’s what makes 2026 extraordinary: it isn’t just Colorado’s 150th. It’s also America’s 250th  the nation’s semiquincentennial. Because Colorado’s statehood is tied so tightly to the country’s founding date, it becomes the only state in the nation observing both anniversaries at the same time. State officials have given the pairing its own tongue-twister of a name: the Sesquisemiquincentennial.

That’s not just a fun fact. It’s a reminder that Colorado’s identity has always been woven into the larger American story a place people came to build something new.

How Colorado Is Celebrating This Weekend

The official commemoration is being coordinated by the America 250 Colorado 150 Commission, established by the state legislature in 2022. Festivities are happening statewide, but a few highlights stand out for August 1:

  • A statehouse celebration on Colorado Day, featuring a reenactment of the 1876 statehood proclamation, a new art exhibit in the Capitol rotunda, and a ceremonial 150th birthday cake.
  • Free museum admission at the History Colorado Center, the Center for Colorado Women’s History, and the Denver Art Museum, including the “38th Star: Colorado Becomes the Centennial State” exhibit.
  • Coordinated 14er climbs, where teams ascend many of Colorado’s famous 14,000-foot peaks a nod to the mountains and outdoor legacy that define the state.

Wherever you are in Colorado, there’s likely a local event happening this weekend worth checking out with the family.

150 Years of Growth: A Real Estate Perspective

You can’t tell the story of Colorado without telling the story of its land and homes. What began as a territory of mining camps and frontier settlements has grown, over 150 years, into one of the most dynamic and sought-after places to live in the country.

The forces that drew people here in 1876  opportunity, open space, and a certain independent spirit — are remarkably similar to what draws people here today. Coloradans have always valued the connection between where they live and how they live: proximity to the outdoors, strong communities, and a sense of building toward the future.

That long history of steady growth is part of what makes Colorado real estate meaningful. Owning a home here isn’t just a transaction it’s becoming part of a story 150 years in the making.
